How To Get Your Garden Decking Ready For The Winter

How To Get Your Garden Decking Ready For The Winter

It’s hard to believe that summer has come and gone already.

As we reflect on the summer we’ve had: alfresco dining and reconnecting with friends, postponed weddings, and not to forget a tremendous effort from the Three Lions, it’s time to look forward to the upcoming seasons. In the world of garden decking, this means a little bit of maintenance.

Winding Down For The Winter

This is the perfect time of year to start winding down your outdoor area for winter so that it can be ready for the warmer months when the time comes.

You may have heard the expression that ‘summer bodies are made in the winter’. Well, with some gentle preparation, pristine spring and summer decking can be made in the winter too.

Remove any pots and planters, patio furniture and clutter from your decking. Leaving them on the decking throughout winter can cause damp spots underneath, which can eventually lead to rot, unless you have rot-resistant UPVC decking.

Autumn Clean

Once you have removed everything, you should give the decking a thorough clean, removing any mould or mildew. This is caused by moisture and it can get particularly bad in the tight cracks of the decking.

Then, sweep up any leaves, dirt and debris. Finally, use hot, soapy water to clean and add a little elbow grease to remove any stubborn markings.

Apply Water Repellent Seal

Applying a water repellent seal can improve the longevity of your garden decking, giving you the ultimate protection against the harshness of winter.

A water repellent seal acts like a shield against the typical winter extremities such as ice. It will also keep your garden decking in a great aesthetic condition and looking like new.

Whether you’re eager to make the most of your decking for some peaceful relaxation, socialising with friends, or spending time with the kids, you’ll be raring to go again at the first signs of spring. These simple tips will ensure that your garden decking is winter ready, so when that early spring sunshine finally reappears, you won’t have to miss a minute of enjoying your outdoor area.
